Cehck out our new blog!

We have a new blog which replaces this one. If you go to you can see it for yourself. We figured we needed a new look to go with our new website and I found that Word Press suited our needs more than Blogger, so it's so long Blogger.

Photography by Lisa + James

It's finally official, James Sanders Photography is now Photography by Lisa + James! As many of you know, Lisa and I have been working as a husband + wife team for quite awhile and now the business name reflects this. Having both of us involved in every aspect of our business allows us to provide better customer care, higher quality photos, new services (like maternity and baby photography) and just changes the dynamic in our work.

We have a new website at to showcase our recent work and new structure, so check it out.

Also, we are proud to introduce our new Partner Photographer, Jake Poehls. Many of my 2007 wedding clients already know Jake since he worked with me while Lisa was on maternity leave. He is a great photographer and a wonderful guy to work with. Starting immediately, we will be booking Jake for weddings in 2008. Once we have his portfolio online I'll make another post on this blog to let everyone know.

Email us at if you are curious about what we are up to or if you just want to say hi!

Jessica + Matthew, Flood Mansion, San Francisco

I just shot this amazing wedding yesterday at the Flood Mansion in San Francisco. Some of you more diligent visitors to this blog may recognize Jessica + Matthew from an earlier posting abuot my Los Angeles engagement shoots. Well, now it's offical, they are married! Jessica did an awesome job putting together a wedding that a professional wedding designer would be proud of. In fact, Jessica did have some top notch professional help from Shannon Berry for the coordination, Got Light for the beautiful lighting and Branching Out Cakes for that cake, of course.

Jessica + Matthew surrounded themselves by their loved ones and treated them to a wonderful night in a beautiful environment. Congratulations, Jess + Matt, and best wishes for a wonderful life together!

Rachel & Ryan, Clos La Chance, Morgan Hill

Rachel and Ryan are a great couple who originate from Texas (at least attended college there), but have seen the light and moved to California. And I'm glad they did, we are all better off for having such great people here in the bay area.

Their wedding took place at the Clos La Chance winery in Morgan Hill on a perfect July day. The weather was mild, the vineyards were full and everyone had a great time.

If you want to see some more photos from their wedding, take a look at the
slideshow, and if you want to see the engagement photos here's another slideshow.

Subha & Ankur, Guglielmo Winery, Morgan Hill

Lisa and I shot the fabulous 2 days of festivities for Subha and Ankur's wedding last month. What a great time it was! Over the past 8-9 months, I feel like I've gotten to know Subha and Ankur fairly well. From our initial meetings, to a two part engagement session (day one was FREEZING!, so we did a second day), to the site inspections, to the Sangeet and finally to their wedding day, I think I have spent more time with them than with any other of my couples. They are so sweet and fun to be around, it's been a pleasure to have this opportunity.

You can tell from the photos that their wedding was a gorgeous event. All the beautiful colors and rituals were amazing. In the end, I don't think I turned even one of their shots into black and white because the Sari's were too colorful to hide.

Want to see a little more? Here's the slideshow.

Stephanie & Josh, Memorial Church, Stanford

Is there a more grand church in Northern California than the Memorial Church on the Stanford Campus? I don't think so. Stephanie and Josh had there spectacular wedding in this beautiful church this past July.

From our first emails, Stephanie wanted to know how I photograph dancing. After seeing her and Josh tear up the dance floor with their swing moves, I now understand why. Hopefully, the photos did their dancing justice.

These two make such a perfect couple, I hope they keep dancing to 100 together. Take a look at their slideshow to see some more.

Melissa & Jim at the Presidio

Congrats to Melissa and Jim who were married this July at the Chapel of our Lady in the Presidio. I loved that she put her wedding on her calendar! I guess it would be a shame if she had double booked her big day : )

One thing I love about doing weddings is that I get to know more than just my clients. Often bride's moms are very involved, sometimes it's the groom's dad, but there is always a connection between me and the families. In a sense, part of what I do is to provide the whole family with a positive experience and beautiful items celebrating the growth of the family.

Melissa and Jim's wedding was a fun, classy affair and I wish them many years of success and happiness.

Lisa & Ricardo, Calistoga Ranch Wedding

Lisa & Ricardo were married on lucky 7-7-7! Their wedding at the Calistoga Ranch was meticulously planned by the bride herself, and she did a wonderful job. In fact, she enjoyed doing it so much she has begun offering coordination services under the name of Bellissima Vita , so be sure to check it out.

You couldn't have asked for a more beautiful day for this sensitive, kind and thoughtful couple.

Stacy & Jeremy, design by Events by Morgan

Check out another amazing wedding! Stacy and Jeremy were married on July 6 at the Old First Presbyterian Church in San Francisco with a reception at the Green Room. The design/coordination credit belongs to Events by Morgan. There are so many great shots from this wedding I didn't know what to include in this post. So, to see more, check out the slideshow.

Legion of Honor & Baker Beach Engagement Session

Craig and Veronica and I just did their engagement session and the photos are great! We had a wonderful time roaming around San Francisco and getting to know one another. I'm looking forward to their wedding which will be here before you know it.

Want to see some more? Take a look at the slideshow!

The Menlo Circus Club

Janet & Ryan were married at Janet's family church and had their reception at the Menlo Circus Club. Now when I first heard of that place I pictured clowns and lion tamers, but in fact it is a Polo club in Menlo Park.

I loved working with Janet, Ryan and their families! I know I say that about everyone, but it's true. Rapport with my clients is everything and good chemistry is the main factor in getting great photos. These days anyone can buy a really nice camera and some lenses and get well exposed shots, but it's the relationships with the people that make photos great (or not so great, as the case may be).

Meg & mike at the Brazilian Room

Check out the wedding of Meg & Mike. It was a beautiful day for their wedding at the Brazilian Room in Tilden Park. Meg is a doctor and Mike is a biology professor at MIT, so there were lots of heady conversations going on all day and night. They are such a nice couple, very genuine and thoughtful, and their friends and family were a pleasure to spend a Sunday with.

Be sure to take a look at their slideshow!

Santa Clara Mission & Marriott

Well, it's been a crazy start to summer! With a new baby and two or three weddings a week I haven't had any time to update this blog until now.

Cynthia & Josh (whose engagement session is posted below somewhere) were married in May at the beautiful Santa Clara Mission Chapel on the campus of the Santa Clara University. I love these guys! They were such a pleasure to work with!

Of course no posting would be complete without a slideshow!

Heather Powell Photography (with a little help from James) at the Legion of Honor

Every so often when I have a Saturday off I'll ride along with one of my great photographer friends to help them shoot their weddings. I love having this opportunity! It allows me to see how other photographers work, and I usually get the luxury of just shooting what I think is beautiful without the pressure of being the main photographer.

On this wedding, I was very lucky to tag along with Heather Powell (be sure to click on her name to see her site) for a rainy day wedding at the Legion of Honor. This couple took the rain in stride and had a beautiful wedding despite Mother Nature's plans.

Thanks Heather!

Please join me in welcoming...

Elle Jae Sanders

Mom and baby are both healthy and beautiful, and dad couldn't be happier.

St. Clement's Episcopal & Mira Vista Country Club

Remember Cara & Patrick from their engagement shoot? It's posted below if you want to take a look, but this time we are looking at the photos from their wedding. Everyone was a bit nervous due to the days of rain prior to their wedding day. Even that morning it was rainy and gray, but almost magically the sky cleared and gave way to a beautiful afternoon and sunset. So basically the rain just cleaned all the dust and dirt off of everything just in time for Cara & Patrick.

These two make such a sweet couple! I wish them the best for all the years to come.

Take a look at the slideshow for more photos.

Nita & Ajay, Cafe Verbena, Oakland

I just shot the super awesome wedding of Nita and Ajay at the Cafe Verbena in Oakland. Their Indian wedding was a three day extravaganza and all had such a great time. Morgan Doan of Events by Morgan did a wonderful job putting on this beautiful wedding.

Nita & Ajay make a great couple and I wish them the best in their new life as husband and wife.

If you want to see more of this wedding take a look at the slideshow .

Maternity Photos

As many of you know, Lisa (my wife) and I are expecting the arrival of our first child. So a couple of nights ago, we went into the studio to do some maternity photos and I am absolutely thrilled with the results! Here are a few samples. If you want to see a few more take a look at the slideshow.

Goria & Neils

Here are some shots from my most recent engagement shoot. Gloria & Neils have such a great chemistry, it was a joy to do their photos!

Linda & Ryan

It was an engagement session weekend for me with one each day for the long weekend. Linda, Ryan and I went out on Sunday for some photos at Golden Gate Park, Dolores Park and Belden Lane. Aren't they a cute couple!?! I'm so happy to be shooting the weddings for all these great people this year.

Wanna see more? Take a look at the slideshow to see more photos.

cherry blossoms!

The cherry blossoms have bloomed in San Francisco! I love this time of year because it actually feels like a change of seasons (which we don't really get here on the coast).

Cara & Patrick are going to be married soon, so we went out for their engagement session on Saturday and took advantage of the beautiful day. We started with a mom-pleasing studio portrait, then went to the Palace of Fine Arts and last but not least to the chilly Embarcadero. Take a look at the slideshow to see more photos.

L.A. engagement shoot, Vol. 2

Here's part two of my LA engagement sessions. Jessica & Matthew are getting married at the Flood Mansion in SF, but live in LA. We started our shoot at Griffith park, set out to the Frank Lloyd Wright's Hollyhock House then on to Figaro for a glass of wine and a snack (all this shooting works up an appetite believe it or not).

I hope they had as good of a time on the shoot as I did! Part of the draw to photography for a lot of us photographers is that we're really interested in people. I love having time to work with new people and get to know how they interact and express themselves.

If you want to see more of this shoot, take a look at the slideshow.

L.A. engagement shoot, Vol. 1

A couple weeks ago I went to LA to shoot a couple of engagement sessions for clients who are getting married in the Bay Area. Back in the day, I lived in Silverlake (the awesomest part of LA {IMHO} ) and spent a lot of time at the beach, so this trip was a trip down memory lane for me.

For Cynthia and Josh's session, we started at UCLA's Royce Hall then found our way to the beach and Santa Monica Pier. It was such a beautiful evening and Cynthia and Josh are a great couple!

Events by Morgan

Check out this awesome event design by Morgan Doan. She created this table as a showcase at an A-list event planners meeting. Isn't it fabulous?

Also to be credited is Asiel Design for the beautiful flowers, McCall's Catering for the delectibles, Hello Lucky for the letterpress menus and Butterfly Cakes for the cake.

If you like what you see, definitely look these folks up.

Nita & Ajay's engagement session

Take a look at these engagement photos from Nita & Ajay's recent session. It was a beautiful day here in San Francsico (which since has been followed by an insane cold snap) so we went to the park and the Embarcadero. I love shooting these sessions and I hope my couples feel the same. Although it's not uncommon for people to start off a little uncomfortable or tense they eventually relax and start to enjoy themselves (or so I'd like to believe).

I'm not just sitting around...

It may seem that the holidays and winter in general would be a time where I do nothing. Not many weddings this time of year. But I do manage to keep busy, in fact, I shot about 50 restaurants last year and will probably do as many in 2007.

Here are some shots of a great restaurant in Walnut Creek called Restaurant Havana.

The best part about doing this work is that someone has to eat the food after we photograph it, and since I'm right there, I usually get first pick. Mmmmm, ceviche!
